Eclogites record pressures over 1.2 GPa (170,000 psi) (45 km (28 mi) depth) at about 400 to 1,000 °C (752 to 1,832 °F) and usually over 600–650 °C (1,112–1,202 °F). This is high-pressure, medium- to high-temperature metamorphism. Diamond and coesite occur as trace constituents in some eclogites and record particularly high pressures.
Eclogite is a metamorphic rock formed when mafic igneous rock is subjected to high pressure. Eclogite forms at pressures greater than those typical of the crust of the Earth. An unusually dense rock, eclogite can play an important role in driving convection within the solid Earth. The fresh rock can be striking in appearance, with red to pink garnet in a green matrix of sodium-rich pyroxene. Accessory minerals include kyanite, rutile, quartz, lawsonite, coesite, amphibole

It is common in the upper mantle, especially in regions occupied by subducted oceanic plates.

Eclogite, peridotite, granulites and associated high-grade metamorphic rocks are exposed within the floor and valley of the deep-seated Palu-Koro fault zone in Central Sulawesi. Our results from the western terrane indicate high‐pressure eclogite facies peak conditions of ~800°C/22 kbar at ~25–20 Ma. Zircon grains from metapelitic samples from the western terrane also yield Early Jurassic metamorphic U‐Pb ages with REE signals that indicate coeval garnet growth. The Jericho eclogite zircon grains that have Th/U values <0.1 are also classified as metamorphic by our algorithm, whereas those with Th/U values >0.1 cannot be assessed using this approach, owing to the lack of other necessary data (e.g. no REE compositions are available to date). Metamorphic grade indicates the intensity of metamorphism developed in a rock or an area with emphasis on temperature. Metamorphic zones represent another effective methodology to assess 2011-07-02 · def. Eclogite: A high-pressure, high-temperature, coarse-grained metamorphic rock consisting primarily of pink-red garnet (almadine-pyrope variety) and green pyroxene ( omphacite, a sodium-rich variety). Eclogites may also contain small amounts of other high-pressure minerals such as kyanite, quartz, hornblende, and zoisite.

constrain the timing of eclogite facies metamorphism at 4.3 ± 0.4 Ma at one locality on Fergusson Island. In this study, similar methods are applied to five variably retrogressed eclogites in order to constrain the timing of eclogite facies metamorphism and rate of subsequent exhumation of these HP metamorphic rocks.

Eclogites are very high-grade, garnet-omphacite metamorphic rocks. They form at mantle depths by burial metamorphism of oceanic crustal rocks (basalts & gabbros).
